Partnership Standards

The Parent Academy provides training opportunities to schools interested in learning how to optimize their family-school partnerships.

The Parent Academy provides training aligned with the Department of Education’s Partnership Standards. Partnership Standards provide direction and ideas on how to work together effectively to help students prepare for college or a career, and outline responsibilities for schools and families.

What will schools learn?
The training sessions will help schools improve their existing parent engagement practices around the five Partnership Standards:

  • Fostering Communication
  • Encouraging Parent Involvement
  • Creating Welcoming Schools
  • Partnering for Student Success
  • Collaborating Effectively

Why should a school participate?
A school should participate because the Parent Academy offers:

Ongoing professional development workshops
– Schools enrolled in the Parent Academy can send representatives to workshops facilitated by Long Island University professionals throughout the year. Workshop topics will cover areas within the Partnership Standards. The Parent Academy will strive to ensure that workshops are held in locations convenient to your school.

Opportunities for networking and collaborating with your peers – Selected schools will work with a peer group of 6-8 area-schools to refine and develop best  practices around family engagement.

Access to online resources for direct and “turnkey” training models – Training videos, presentations, and other resources will be available to school-based teams to reinforce the lessons learned during professional development workshops. Materials will be adaptable to encourage teams to, in turn, train others within their school communities (i.e., “turnkey” training) to enhance parent engagement within their schools.

Direct assistance from Parent Academy staff – Selected schools will have the opportunity to receive individualized support from Parent Academy staff upon request.

How can schools enroll?
Speak with your School Leadership Team about joining the Parent Academy. When the application period for the 2013-2014 school year opens, a form will become available at http://www.nycparentacademy.org/. Once a school joins the Parent Academy, all parents, teachers, counselors, parent coordinators, and community-based organization members in that school can participate in Parent Academy activities.

Materials are available on the Standards on which workshops have been conducted.
