The Office of Web Management Services has created dynamic school Web portals using the Microsoft Content Management Server (CMS).
Some of the features of the new portals are:
- School Webmasters will have more areas available to post/manage school specific content
- New content areas can be added upon request
- Sites can be customized using school colors, logo, and a school photo
- An easy to manage photo gallery is now available
- Multiple users can contribute content to the site
- Different access rights exist to facilitate workflow and approval
- No HTML or FTP knowledge required. All updates are done using a Web based interface.
The pilot phase for these web portals has been completed. Most school Web sites were updated at the end of July 2006 with the new portal template designs shown below. Some of the schools that participated in the pilot program were:
Tottenville High School
Boys and Girls High School
Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences
New Utrecht High School
Sheepshead Bay High School
Wadleigh Secondary School for the Performing and Visual Arts
Training
School Webmasters are assigned by the school principals per the IAUP (Internet Acceptable Use Policy).
All school Webmasters must be DOE employees. The principal must confirm by e-mail before the registration of a Webmaster will be approved. Please contact your network leader to arrange training.
To customize your school Web portal
The school principal or Webmaster can send an e-mail to owsinfo@schools.nyc.gov and attach this Excel Spreadsheet. The spreadsheet should include as much of the following information as you want to include—please do not send multiple emails.
- Name and DOE email address of school webmaster
- School Principal contact information
- School colors
- School logo (jpg, gif or png format)
- School motto
- Picture of the school (jpg, gif or png format - must be an image of the front of the school, should be 318 pixels wide at 72dpi.)
- Select one of the template styles: Classic or Modern.
- District, Borough and school number (DBN) of school. Ex: 7 R 470
For Emergency updates
Until your school Webmaster has been trained you can request an update by sending an e-mail to owsinfo@schools.nyc.gov.
