Safety First

The “Safety First” Program takes many precautions

  • Round-the-clock emergency hotline for reporting safety problems.
  • Immediate action taken to correct safety violations.
  • Construction work performed at night, on weekends and during the summer months to limit disruptions in occupied schools.
  • The SCA installs protective sidewalk shedding and/or fencing at every school requiring exterior work prior to actual construction start date.
  • The SCA never performs asbestos removal, lead paint removal or any other high risk work in occupied school buildings.
  • Environmental experts verify that asbestos, lead paint and other hazardous materials have been removed and that school areas are safe.

The Community Relations Department of the New York City School Construction Authority is always ready to respond to your concerns. SCA maintains a 24-hour emergency hotline, 7 days a week. If you have questions about construction work at your school, call (718) 472-2515.

We notify the entire school community immediately if any emergency develops.

The SCA Project Management and Community Relations Departments are in constant contact with school administrators, staff and school district representatives during all phases of a school construction project.

Before construction begins:

  • Site Safety plan is developed by licensed professionals and discussed with the school community.
  • Schedule of Work is planned with the school community to limit disruption to the educational process.
  • protective sidewalk shedding and/or fencing is installed before exterior construction work begins.

More Inspections translate into a Safer Working Environment
