For the 2013-14 school year OPT will offer a variety of professional development opportunities for school staff assigned to manage transportation in their schools.
For Public Schools and Charter Schools
Transportation Basics for a New Transportation Coordinator
Workshops for school staff will be held at OPT headquarters in Long Island City. The sessions provide a basic overview of transportation services and are structured to assist anyone assigned to handle transportation issues in their school. Agenda topics include:
- OPT overview
- Managing key student data
- Transportation functions in ATS
- Managing MetroCards
- Assigning yellow bus stops
- Using OPT Web applications
- Best Practices
- Support for schools
A question and answer period at each workshop allows attendees to ask specific questions about field trips, NCLB or any transportation-related issue.

Transportation Skill Building
Workshops developed for school staff with novice or intermediate skills will be held at OPT headquarters in Long Island City. The sessions are structured to allow participants to trouble shoot specific issues in their schools and review individual school data to discuss problem solving. Agenda topics include:
- OPT Ridership reports
- Using the OPT 199 application
- Requesting replacement MetroCards
- Variance and distance check requests
- Suspensions and Students in Temporary Housing
- NCLB and Gifted & Talented programs
- Field trips

Transportation Training for non-public school staff can be arranged by e-mailing ejacobs2@schools.nyc.gov . Group workshops or individual school visits can be scheduled as needed to assist staff using NPSIS and OPT Web applications to manage transportation at their school.
