Award Honors Individuals Who Advance Important and Innovative Strategies to Improve the Lives of Young Black Men
Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today congratulated Chief Equality Officer Roland G. Fryer for receiving the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Initiative award honoring individuals who “have shown courage, leadership, and innovation in developing and executing winning strategies and advancing important social initiatives targeting or significantly impacting young black men.” The award recognizes Dr. Fryer’s work in developing and executing the New York Million Motivation Campaign, a pilot program that seeks to help high-need students internalize the connections between education and success. Dr. Fryer will be honored this afternoon at the group’s annual forum.
“I congratulate Dr. Fryer for winning this award and commend Pipeline for recognizing his innovative strategies to tackle the achievement gap that persists in New York City and across the country,” said Chancellor Klein. “Establishing true educational equality is the great civil rights issue of our time, and we appreciate the support this award demonstrates for our bold approach to achieving that goal.”
“Dr. Fryer’s work is focused on the children,” said William J. Snipes, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, one of the sponsors of the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Initiative. “His ideas are compelling, brave, and innovative, and we are honored to have him as part of our program.”
“I’m grateful for this honor and gratified that it comes as we continue to develop strategies to re-brand achievement, helping high-need students fully appreciate the value of education,” Dr. Fryer said. “This recognition is a great sign that more people are willing to join our fight to end the educational crisis plaguing African-American and Hispanic communities.”
Along with Dr. Fryer, the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Initiative honored Bard College President Leon Botstein, for the Bard Prison Initiative and City University of New York Chancellor Matthew Goldstein, for the City University of New York Black Male Initiative.
The Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Initiative connects the legal, financial services, and business communities with the public sector around issues that affect the African-American community nationwide: early childhood education; public school education; employment and economic development; criminal justice; prison reform and reentry; and opportunities for high-potential youth.
