Named After the First Female Vice Presidential Candidate and Three-term Congresswoman
Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott and Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan today announced the former P.S. 290 in Queens will be renamed the Geraldine A. Ferraro Campus, after the first female vice presidential candidate and three-term Congresswoman of the Ninth District. The campus will open in September 2014 with a new school called the A.C.E. Academy for Scholars. It is located in School District 24 at 55-20 Metropolitan Avenue, just a few blocks from the late Congresswoman’s district office.
“I am thrilled to announce the name of this new campus after a Congresswoman who was a teacher at one point in her career and continues to be an inspiration to youngsters around the country who are interested in public service,” Chancellor Walcott said. “I want to thank Cathy Nolan for her support of this new campus.”
“I am excited that the New York City Department of Education will be naming Public School 290 the Geraldine Ferraro campus,” said Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan. “I have championed both this school and this name from the beginning and could think of no other person more fitting to have a school named in their honor. Geraldine Ferraro was a great role model to me and countless other women in politics, a champion for our community, city and state, a wonderful member of Congress, teacher, lawyer, and an inspiration to us all. My thanks to Mayor Bloomberg, Chancellor Walcott, SCA president Lorraine Grillo, PEP member Dmytro Fedkowskyj and the members of Community Board 5, Community Education Council 24 and my colleagues in government who supported this endeavor.
