Statement by Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott On $36 Million Grant For Teacher and Leadership Effectiveness and Development

10/12/2012

“In order to put a great teacher in every classroom, we need to recruit, train, and retain the best educators and this $36 million grant will help us do just that. The funding will allow us to expand our successful teacher development initiative, provide professional development to 700 promising future school leaders, develop a residency program to identify 300 of the most promising teachers and leaders, and create a system to measure teacher effectiveness and student progress. However, we are barred from accessing the funds until we have a teacher evaluation system. The need for a teacher evaluation system is even greater than before. The sooner we have an evaluation system in place, the sooner we will be able to put this money to work.”
