Hi. I'm planning on having my 4 year old take the test, but I want to be able to describe to him what it will be like. I read in the handbook that 4 year olds won't be expected to bubble in their responses, but in that case, how does it work with a large group of kids? Does each child have an instructor with him/her? Will their be several kids in a room at a time, or is it one-on-one? Also, how long does the test last? Thanks a million! Erin
Hi Erin - All 4 year olds or those children born in 2004 will take the test in a one-to-one ratio. This means that there will be one teacher administering the test to one child.
I want to send my request for testing form but cannot find the address to which to send it. Please advise. Thanks, Sarah
Hi Sarah - The Request for Testing Forms can be returned to your child’s public school, if your child is currently enrolled in a NYC public school. If your child is not currently enrolled in a NYC public school, the Request for Testing Form must be returned to a Borough Enrollment Office. The location of the Borough Enrollment Offices is included on-line in the Gifted & Talented Test Information Handbook.
My child is currently attending pre-k at a public school. I want my child tested for the G&T Kindergarten program. The instructions indicates that children that are currently enrolled at a NYC Public School should submit the G&T application to their current school. Please tell who is supposed to get the form at my school (i.e. guidance conselor, school secretary, parent coordinator)? In addition to that, are the parents given a list of the district schools that offer G&T, so they can select the one that is closest to them?
Your child’s school will identify the responsible person who will collect the forms. Generally schools utilize the parent coordinators or the school secretaries. Please contact your child’s school for this school-specific information. We list all G&T programs by district on our web site. Please note that if additional students qualify for gifted and talented programs, we will open new classes to meet these needs in grade K and one, so this list may change.
What are the advantages of being in a gifted and talented program?
Well, Gifted and Talented programs are meant to serve students whose educational needs may not be met in a traditional classroom setting. This means that these classes are usually taught by teachers licensed/experienced in this area and generally will provide instructional adaptations and modifications to the curriculum. It is important to understand that these classes or programs should not to be perceived as better, but different.
My daughter was born in 2004 and I would like to have her tested for the G&T program. I understand that in Staten Island, the program is not available until 1st grade. So do I have her tested this year or do I wait until next year? Thank you.
In the past, Gifted and Talented programs were not available to Kindergarten students in Staten Island, the Bronx and Queens, however, starting in Sept. 2009, all boroughs will start their G&T programs in Kindergarten. This means that if your child is tested and meets the eligibility criteria, she will have a program to attend in Kindergarten.
