Teacher Name: Leah Lennon Class: 3rd - 6th Grade Science
Current Units of study:
3rd grade is learning about:
Living creature 3rd Graders are learning about measurement. By the end of the unit, all third graders will be able to measure length and width, mass, volume, and temperature using metric units (centimeters, grams, milliliters, and degrees Celsius).
4th grade is learning about:
The water cycle
Graders are learning about food chains and webs. Students have studied grass plants, crickets, chameleons, and anoles, to see how they each survive on their own, as well as how they are each depend on the other.
5th grade is learning about:
5th Graders are learning about landforms. Students are using models to simulate erosion, deposition, and the different landforms these forces create.
6th grade is learning about:
6th Graders are learning about weather and water. They have already learned about different terms to describe the weather, and different tools that meteorologists use to measure the weather. Currently, we are exploring the various ways that heat is transferred, and, in the coming weeks, we will be exploring the water cycle in-depth.
Future units of study:
3rd Graders will be learning about physics of sound. This means that the students will explore where sound comes from, and will use a variety of instruments to learn about sound.
4th Graders will be learning about magnetism and electricity. Students will explore with magnets, and then learn how to make an electrical circuit.
5th Graders will learn about food and nutrition. Students will learn about the food pyramid, and explore fats and sugars in-depth.
6th Graders will learn about populations and ecosystems. Students will explore how living things interact in an environment.
Important dates for parents to remember:
There will be an upcoming science trip for 6th graders at the end of January. More details will be available at a later date.
Special projects or partnerships with the class:
Class 603 (Ms. Lennon’s homeroom) has been working on cleaning up the school garden, and has also planted daffodil bulbs that will beautiful the garden in the spring.
