Reading
The students are practicing using a "storyteller voice," looking at the picture and saying what the character is doing, thinking about how the character is feeling, and making their voice sound like the characters.
We will soon learn how to point under each word, look for words we know, use thepicture to help us, and use the first letter of unknown words to help us figure them out!
Math
This month in math we worked very hard on our countingskills! We count every day 1-20 and backward from 20-1.
We spend a good deal of time learning our “tricky teen”numbers (11-19), as there numbers frequently tend to confuse children. By theend of kindergarten, we expect all children to be able to count 1-20 andidentify all numbers 1-20.
Later this month and in to November we will be working onnumber identification, counting and 1:1 matching when counting (counting 20items and recognizing each number said corresponds to another item)
Science
In November, we will be looking more closely at leavesbeginning with our visit to central park on October 26. Students will go onleaf hunt to make comparisons of leaves, work at center with representationalmaterials, and make a leaf book. We will be observing and describing theproperties of a variety of leaves, including their shape, size, color and edgetexture.
Writing
We have been working very hard on writing on true stories inwhich something happens. Our goal is for children to be able to write threepage stories about something small that occur in their everyday lives. Studentshave been writing about things that happen to them while in our classroom, atthe park, at home and more. We are practicing using storyteller languageincluding “One day…. And then…. and last,” when we read and write or stories!
Students are beginning to label object in their stories,including writing the sounds they hear. Many students are writing the beginningsounds of words in their stories. Some students are even starting to writesentences!
