IS 289, opened in the fall of 1998, is organized around the belief that sustained and directed effort can yield achievement for all. We believe that intellectual endeavor comprises not only a set of problem-solving and reasoning capabilities, but the habits of that lead one to use them regularly. We also believe that learning is a social construct. That is, often our understanding of ideas is developed through interaction with others. Taking advantage of young people's social tendencies and needs, we create collaborative opportunities for students to develop, test, revise, and refine their thinking. They are then charged with finding ways to communicate their understanding to a large audience so they can impact thinking and behavior in the community.
