Special Programs

Advisory - Advisory will be an integral aspect in the high school experience of every student. Students will join a group of peers led by a teacher. Meeting two to three times every week, advisories will allow students the opportunity to learn about each other and develop skills that are crucial to succeeding in the high school, the fields of design and construction or any other career path. During the second semester, Advisory will focus on compiling and presenting a final portfolio of student learning and accomplishments for the year. Advisory groups will help students to meet challenges, reach goals and forge strong relationships.

Design Seminar (ninth grade) and Design Studio (tenth grade) - These courses will be taught by our Architects-in-Residence, full-time professional architects who will work with students one day per week in developing skills that are essential to the fields of design and construction: seeing, collaborating, presenting and critiquing. In Design Seminar, students will learn the foundations of architecture and master drawing and observation skills. In the tenth grade, students will begin to build and make models in our Design Studio class. Both classes will involve field trips and will require students to complete assignments outside of class.

Builders Workshop - students will have the opportunity to hear from professionals in the architecture and construction fields. These speakers will talk with students about their daily work and how they arrived at their current position. They will answer questions about high school and college and how to best prepare for a career in the field.

College Preparatory Programs and Internships - Beginning in the freshman year, students will participate in college preparatory programs, such as college visits, practice application writing, resume building activities, and SAT preparation. By the senior year, most of our students will be working in firms and organizations around the city on a part-time basis.
