Policies & Regulations

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is an integral part of the learning process.  Homework should be reflected as part of a student’s grade.  Homework should reinforce the lessons being conducted in the classroom or prepare students for the next lesson.  HOMEWORK SHOULD BE ASSIGNED FIVE TIMES PER WEEK.  Along with measuring the progress of the student, homework should enhance the lesson being taught.  A substantial, meaningful assignment should challenge students and help extend the classroom into the home.  Vary the types of assignments.

Checking Homework

To have value in the learning process, work must be collected, graded and recorded, and students should be aware of the quality of their assignments.  The graded homework should be returned to the students as soon as possible.  Teachers must keep a record of individual student’s homework, and students should be encouraged to keep a folder of their graded assignments.

Weight of Homework in Determining Grades

Since homework represents a part of the learning process, its value should be part of a student’s grade.  In general, quality and quantity of homework submitted is to be reflected in student grades.  Homework is to be counted as approximately 5%-10% of the final grade.

GRADING POLICY, REPORT CARDS AND

PROGRESS REPORTS

Six report cards and two formal conferences are used to provide parents, students and teachers better communication within an annualized school structure.  Contractually, all teachers and supervisory staff must be present for these parent-teacher conferences.  Those absent will be required to make-up the time in an appropriate manner.

GAHS faculty members will meet during common planning time to do case conferencing. Case conferencing will provide teachers and other staff members the opportunity to share information regarding failing students and to create a plan of action resulting in their success.

For the first marking period, Gramercy Arts distributes first report cards to parents during Open School conferences. Second and third marking period report cards are distributed in section.  See new grading policy, which will be distributed at your SLC meetings.

  1. A variety of assessments should be given to get a total picture of what the student has learned.
  2. Students should have the opportunity to do special projects and/or assignments to improve their grade.
  3. Classroom participation, behavior and the homework record are part of the student’s grade.
  4. No student may be graded solely on the basis of attendance or absence from class.  Attendance is a factor in grades only to the extent that it is directly reflected in academic performance.  Classroom participation may be considered in the grading process. Cutting is not to be tolerated and must be reflected in the grade.  Encourage failing students to turn around by making up work and doing additional assignments.
  5. Grading records must be submitted to the Assistant  Principal of Organization at the end of each semester.

Regents Exams

Regent’s exams are required for graduation.  If a student, registered in a Regents class, fails both the class and the Regents, he/she is to be registered for summer school.  If a student passes the class, but fails the required Regents, he/she should be registered for the appropriate academy class in summer school.
