The mission of the school library at Washington Irving High School is to foster a community of learning that leads to strong academic achievement. We strive to provide access to high quality resources in a variety of formats that support curricular and instructional goals and that respond to diverse student needs and interests. The library currently maintains a 16,500 volume print collection, 35 periodical subscriptions, 500 videos, six subscription databases, and a 15 patron computer lab.

Through guided individual, small group, and full class instruction by the school library media specialists, it is the hope that students can then independently employ information literacy, technology, and critical thinking skills in their subject area learning experiences. Our instruction teaches students how to access information effectively and efficiently, how to evaluate information critically and competently, and how to use that information accurately and creatively. The School Library Media Center constantly keeps abreast of new technologies and formats that would allow students to access and manipulate this information in ways most conductive to learning.

Our school library is staffed by two certified library media specialists and is open everyday between the hours of 7:30 and 3:45 for students and teachers. Students may visit the library before school, after school, during their lunch periods, or with their subject class. Our library is a powerful intellectual and social space where students and teachers can gather ideas, exchange points of view, and learn together.
