Mission Statement

Independence High School

Library and Media Center

The mission of the Independence High School Library and Media Center is to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment that encourages students to attend school willingly and enthusiastically and that stimulates curiosity, so that they can acquire practical ideas and academic knowledge that will make them lifelong readers and learners.  Our goal is to motivate students (both in school and beyond our doors) to achieve their personal aspirations, whatever they may be. We will accomplish this mission with our students by:

• Establishing the Library as a safe haven that promotes cooperative and independent learning, an open exchange of opinions and willingness to consider new ideas
• Providing evaluative but non-judgmental instruction that supports our school’s rich and varied academic curriculum
• Instilling a strong appreciation of reading, writing and research through modeled and differentiated instruction, for both personal enjoyment and professional development
• Collaborating with our teachers to ensure that our school-wide instructional framework of comprehension skills and strategies are reinforced beyond the classroom
• Helping to foster wonder and curiosity, and to instill a mature sense of social responsibility; and
• Encouraging the celebration of diversity and tolerance for all people and cultures.
