The mission of P.S. / M.S. 149 is to foster and maintain a positive and structured environment where children, teachers and parents are participants in the total learning process. Our students are challenged to achieve personal growth and success through differentiated instruction in all curriculum areas. At P.S. / M.S. 149, we continously foster the development of each student's positive self-image while we encourage and develop their love of learning in a collaborative, supportive atmosphere. Our mantra "Where Excellence is a Must" demands"Accountability" as educators to our students, our parents and to ourselves,"Equity" for each and every student in our building and "Excellence" given by all teachers and staff and supported and expected from all students.
Comprehensive Balanced Literacy Program, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Robin Hood Foundation Library Initiative, Universal Prekindergarten, CTT classes, District 75 Inclusion Program, Cultural Arts, Literary Leaders and Renaissance Learning. Middle School electives include: Step, Cooking, Steel Drums, Journalism, Business, Principal's Book Club and Sign Language.
P.S. / M.S. 149's extracurricular activities include: Extended Day Programs, Zero Period, Saturday Academy and Holiday Test Prep emphasizing Literacy and Math, Instrumental Instruction which includes Keyboard and Steel Drums. We also have Chorus, Chess in the Schools, Drama & Photography Clubs and Project Arts. We have formed a partnership with PubliColor, a program that allows middle school students the opportunity to learn the trade of painting while they beautify the school. We also have formed a partnership with LMLI (Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute) in which many of our students are part of the "Student Leadership" program which is funded by LMLI.
We at P.S. / M.S. 149 are thankful for the many organizations that support our school. We have partnerships with the following organizations: The Robin Hood Foundation, Harlem Children's Zone, Wachovia Bank, the NYC Public Library, City College, Teachers' College, Holcombe Rucker Afterschool Program and the Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute (LMLI).
