Our Mission

We believe that all children are capable of learning and achieving personal levels of excellence when supported in the learning process within a challenging educational environment. We are committed to developing and maintaining an educational environment that challenges all students to achieve their personal best within the context of a child-centered, inquiry-based pedagogy and in keeping with New York City and State Standards. The Manhattan School for Children is modeled on the philosopher John Dewey's concept of a community of learners and Howard Gardner's understanding of multiple forms of intelligence and styles of learning. Our fundamental premise is that children learn by doing and need experiences in many forms and modes to truly understand and learn.
