The social studies curriculum is part of the District’s general education program which is concerned with the preparation of citizens for participation in a democratic society. It is designed to help young citizens become rational decision-makers so they can resolve personal problems and influence public policy through effective social action, and become informed participants in an increasingly interdependent world. To accomplish this task, the social studies program draws upon a variety of sources, among which are history and the social science disciplines: political science, sociology, economics, geography, psychology and a thorough study of our governmental system.
Global History 1
This course is the first half of a two-year sequence. At the end of tenth grade, students will be required to pass a New York State Regents exam based on the knowledge of world history. After a thematic introductory unit, students will study the history of the world chronologically from prehistoric times to the age of Absolutism. Analysis of primary and secondary sources will drive the instruction with a concentration on writing and reading skills. A district wide mock-Regents exam will be given in June of 9th grade. Social Studies themes and concepts such as global interdependence, culture, political systems, and scarcity will be emphasized.
U.S. History and Government

Analysis of primary and secondary sources will drive the instruction with a concentration on writing and reading skills. Students are required to pass the New York Regents examination given in June.
