ESL (English as a Second Language)

    The ESL Program

    The ESL Program provides a solid structure for Englishlanguage development for ESL learners. The ESL teacher is fully certified. Theamount and level

    of instruction is based on the English LAB R score or the NYSESLAT score (beginning,intermediate, and advanced/transitional) along with teacher judgment

    provides students with differentiated instruction. Awell-structured bilingual/ESL program will allow students to exit within threeyears. The course of instruction prepares students to participate in ELA activitiesconducted by the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher provides anadditional 45 minutes of English language instruction during the regularlyscheduled ELA period, according to students’ needs. Students whose parents haveopted them out of the bilingual program, receive services from the ESL teacheras mandated by CR Part 154.

     

    In Kindergarten, first and second grades, the ESLinstructional model for beginning/ intermediate students is 360minutes per weekof ESL and content area instruction in English with ESL methodologies. The ESLmodel for advanced students is 180 minutes of ESL per week, 180 minutes perweek of English Language Arts daily and content area instruction in Englishwith ESL methodologies.

     

    • Methodologies, materials and content appropriate to the student’s linguistic needs and are fully aligned with the NYSED ESL, NLA, ELA math, science,

          social studies Learning Standards.

    • Students are grouped based on either the NYSESLAT or LAB R assessments into Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced levels and the instruction is

    aligned with the CR 154 units ofinstruction requirements.

    • Content area instruction is taught in English in general education classrooms using ESL methodologies.

     

    All the cluster specialty teachers serve ELLs. PS 112 hasthe following cluster teachers:
