Science

  • This science class has a mandatory laboratory component; the course terminates in a required Regents examination each June; students taking this course must be at grade level in mathematics.

Advanced Placement Classes and Honors Classes

  • Advanced Placement Biology: open to students who have demonstrated mastery of Biology and Chemistry (both are prerequisites); students are required to sit for the advanced placement exam in May
  • Advanced Placement Chemistry: open to students who have demonstrated mastery of Chemistry (prerequisite); students are required to sit for the advanced placement exam in May
  • Advanced Placement Physics: open to students who have demonstrated mastery of Physics (prerequisites); students are required to sit for the advanced placement exam in May
  • Advanced Placement Environmental Science: open to students who have performed well in previous science classes and are interested in taking an interdisciplinary course; students are required to sit for the advanced placement exam in May
  • Honors Biology: acceptance based on incoming 9 th grade students junior high school record
  • Honors Chemistry: Biology teacher recommendation required
  • Honors Physics: Chemistry teacher recommendation required

 Electives

  • Authentic Science Research Class: this specialized 3-year program enables students to learn research skills while working with mentors from the scientific community; students select their own topics of research and may earn up to 12 college credits for the work they complete; this program prepares students to enter nation competitions such as Intel in their senior year
  • Astronomy: senior year elective open to any student who has fulfilled their lab science requirement
  • Enonmental Studies: senior year elective open to any student who has fulfilled their lab science requirement
  • Current Issues in Science: senior year elective open to any student who has fulfilled their lab science requirement

Science Extra Curricular Activities

Student may take part in many programs offered by the Science Department for remediation or advancement purposes. These include:
