THE FINLEY MUSIC PROGRAM
The Music and the Brain Foundation has generously endowed our school with a 3 year music program which includes a fully equipped Piano Lab, musical compact discs, workbooks, rhythm cards and other related materials. A comprehensive curriculum designed to accommodate Pre-K through grade 2; it has been serving as the pinnacle of our music program.
This part of the music program explores the many different elements and uses of music necessary to gain a deeper understanding and learn the language of music. Furthermore, as the child ages and becomes more experienced, this concise system will simplify the transition to a stringed, percussive, woodwind or brass instrument that will enrich their musical appreciation and experience.
Our endowment from the Winston-Gill Foundation will provide all third and fourth graders the opportunity to continue their music exploration through the Winston-Gill Recorder Program. It was designed to enhance the students' creativity and cognitive-intellectual skill. It better prepares all participants with an easier transition when learning wind, brass and stringed instruments.
The New York Philharmonic School Partnership Program is a three year program for all third and fourth grades designed to stimulate the students' creativity and understanding of music through the experience of symphonic music. In studying great musical works, attending live performances of the New York Philharmonic, and composing music of their own, students acquire focused listening skills, performance skills on the recorder, musical literacy both symbolic and verbal, strategies for group work, knowledge of cultural history, and a personal relationship to the art of music.
Beginning Band is a fundamental class designed for beginning fourth, fifth and sixth grade students. Students will meet in sectional instrument classes and will learn the necessary skills for instrumental performance. They will learn a vast amount of musical and instrumental concepts the first year and will perform scales, music and band literature throughout the year. Performances will include a Christmas Concert, a Spring Concert, and other appearances.
This has become a great opportunity for our children to gain a better appreciation for music and developing their hidden talents through a disciplined method of both teaching and learning. The children have also learned to devote time to listening and practicing. This discipline and hard work can easily be transferred to all academic areas.
