STUDENT SUPPORT

 

Attendance:

        The school’s attendance plan helps in the improvement of school attendance. Members of the attendance team meet regularly to discuss attendance problems and incentives. They conduct workshops for parents & staff. The students’ incentive coordinator implements special programs and incentives such as:

    * Attendance bulletin board to promote students pride in maintaining good attendance and punctuality.

    * Attendance assemblies for student with perfect attendance and the integration of attendance topics in these assemblies.

    * Presentation of monthly attendance awards to classes and students and prizes such ads pizza parties and trips.

Pre-Referral Intervention Process:

        The Pupil Personnel Committee of P.S. 129M meets every two weeks to discuss pre-referrals submitted by teachers, CSE conference individual cases, review anecdotes / guidance books and make recommendations to parents and teachers in planning the best intervention strategy for the student.

Child Abuse Prevention:

        The Principal’s designee as well as liaison to the State Central Registry regularly conducts child abuse workshops and training and strategies to parents during professional development days. For staff, this includes on –going training to parents and staff during professional development days. For staff, this includes ongoing training on the chancellor’s regulation A-750.

Students In Temporary Housing:

        The school guidance counselor, family worker and attendance teacher will maintain a close relationship with the Department of education liaison and staff in the temporary housing facility in order to provide the best help for the students and parents in temporary housing.

Parental Involvement:

        Parental involvement is a crucial factor in any child’s academic success and social/emotional development. The Pupil Personnel Committee, in conjunction with the parent coordinator, will conduct workshops on topics such as:

    * Constructive discipline

    *  Helping children with homework

    *  Proper study habits

    * Maintaining clear, open lines of communication with your child’s teacher

    * Preventing child abuse
