Academics

Language Department

As a college preparatory school we would like our students to be citizens of the world and to be liberally educated. An essential part of our educational program involves travel. Our students are encouraged to learn a second language by incorporating travel into the curriculum. We offer: Latin, Japanese, French, Spanish and American Sign Language. Our goal is to have students learn how to speak at least two languages before they graduate high school. In addition to the three-year sequence in language, we offer Advanced Placement courses in Spanish and French. We have traveled to the following countries: Spain, Mexico, France, Canada, England, Japan, Ghana, South Africa, Italy, Mali, Nepal and Bela Russia. We believe that learning takes place all over the world.

Math

The Math Department is led by Assistant Principal, Ms. Jenifer Hodge, who also serves as the Math Coach. Our Math Department has outstanding teachers, who in addition to being State Certified may have successfully completed advanced degrees. A key to our success in Math is the extra time our teachers spend with our students. Most teachers conduct after school tutorials. All teachers conduct intensive Regents and Advanced Placement Saturday tutorials in April and May.

Science

The Science Department is led by Mr. Timothy Hearn. Our Science Department has outstanding teachers who in addition to being state certified and have successfully completed advanced degrees including doctoral studies. A key to our success in Science is the extra time our teachers spend with our students. Most teachers conduct after school tutorials. All teachers conduct intensive Regents and Advanced Placement Saturday tutorials in April and May.

English

The English Department is led by Ms. Lea Brown. In addition to traditional high school English classes, The Frederick Douglass Academy also offers Advanced Placement English. We also offer college English classes at Hunter College as part of the College Now Program. We employ an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of English. Our Social Studies teachers and English teachers collaborate on reading assignments, research projects and field trips.

Social Studies

The Social Studies Department is led by Mr. Curtis Lawrence. In our Middle School, we offer accelerated courses in American History. Our Social Studies Department has outstanding teachers who in addition to being state certified and have successfully completed advanced degrees. A key to our success in Social Studies is the extra time our teachers spend with our students. Most teachers conduct after school tutorials. All teachers conduct intensive Regents and Advanced Placement Saturday tutorials in April and May. We offer Global Studies, American Studies, Government and Economics taught in a college lecture style. We are fortunate to be affiliated with the Gilder Lehrman Institute which provides the school with the opportunity to offer additional courses in American Studies, such as American Political Tradition. The Philosophical Foundations of the American Government, Voices of Vietnam, Brown vs. BOE, Islamic/Israeli relations.

Physical Education/Art/Music/Dance & Sports

The Physical Education Department is lead by Mr. Ernesto Acosta. The Physical Education Department teaches all sports. Usually the sports are taught just before the season begins.

Art

Mr. Roger Schermond heads the Art and provides an intensive art education course to our students which resembles the first year of college art.

Music

Mr. Monteiro leads our Music program. Students have the opportunity to learn music theory and play an instrument. In the lower grades students start with piano and move up to instruments. We also offer Vocal music.

Dance

Mr. Arthur Saab heads our dance department. Our students are given the opportunity to take dance in grades 6-9. In High School it is an elective.

Sports

Mr. Mangan is our Athletic Director. He coordinates 19 sports teams and shares this responsibility with Ms. Ronchetti. NCAA rules are introduced in the middle school so as to keep students focus on academics.
