What Parents Should Know

TRIPS Following Chancellor's Regulations for trips require contracts and signed permission letters.  Parents must sign permission letters or student may not attend on a trip.     Students and Parents must sign a  Contracts for Behavior - students must adhere to behavior guidelines to ensure safety and security.   Student must be in Full uniform - unless otherwise noted due to the nature of the trip. 

Homework Policy- Daily/ Weekly Assignments

Grades K-2

1. Daily study of sight words- Dolch words- Kept in HW folder and parents made aware- Daily Study with parents at home. Parents are to review 10 words per night and keep track of mastery. Practice writing of these words are also expected at home in folders. Encourage and motivate your parents. Post parent recognition board!

2.Write 5-10 words 5 times each for several days and assess progress each Friday for spelling. This is active practice of sight words . Eventually students form letter strands in K to create sentences. Grade 1 are expected to write in complete sentences moving into complex sentences using connecting words after the first few months. These connecting words are to be posted on one of your strategy charts. Grade 2 are expected to practice and produce paragraphs. They will use graphic organizers are tools to accomplish this task.

3. Daily Reading- 15-20 min - Parents are to read to children daily at home. Children in K- Document reading with parent at home and collect signatures. Daily Reading Logs are maintained in a folder where you check for daily entries and parental signatures. Check logs throughout the week. These can be checked by table. They take these home but every morning are collected and used in class. Every room must have a basket labeled Reading Logs in case they are collected for review. Books read at home- A common text.

Independent books they read in school are also logged. This is the process. Using common text facilitates common discussions, response to text based questions.

Grade 2- Use post its to annotate- This is taught and students trained first. They use post its with common text and respond to 2-3 questions in their Reading Response Journals.

4. Daily Writing: Reading Response Journals are for daily hw writing. Daily entries answering text based questions. K parents are to note that this is a collaborative effort. Grade 1 begins as collaborative as well but towards end of year more independent work by part of the student. All K-2 students need appropriate graphic organizers as tools for scaffolding their thoughts prior to writing on paper.

5. Math- Daily math is review of current learnings- Showing their thinking- Students are to show their work through use of illustrations, picto graphs and eventually words.

6. Science/ Social Studies- Monthly Projects based on current unit- These projects are application of knowledge- TASKS that are completed at home, given a month notice of what needs to be done and given to parents in both languages so that parents are responsible to assist. Graded by components: Creativity, Content, Parent piece etc.. There will be 1 project a month in either one. Teachers who decide to do 2 projects a month is at their discretion. We are pushing rigor and consistency.

Day 1- Five times each, Day 2- Sentences using word in context, Day 3- Define using Dictionary, Day 4- Study, Day 5- Vocabulary Assessment every Friday. This is a coherent habit we are forming to build on vocabulary use and academic language used in strategy charts and classroom discussions.

2. Daily Reading- 30-40 min - Daily Reading Logs are maintained in a folder where you check for daily entries and parental signatures. Check logs throughout the week. These can be checked by table. These are text dependent questions that serve as entry points of discussion for following day.

4. BI WEEKLY- ESSAY TASK- This task will be used with our own informational or persuasive writing rubrics for grading. Students are to use text as evidence and cite their evidence. Grade 3- Start as reading response 2 paragraphs then build. Grade 4- 1 page to start Grade 5- 1 ½ to start. More focus on Non Fiction. Build stamina in writing.

5. Math- Daily math is review of current learnings- Showing their thinking- Students are to show their work. Go Math has assigned hw sheets. You are assessing content on a weekly basis.

6. Science/ Social Studies- Monthly Projects based on current unit- These projects are application of knowledge- TASKS that are completed at home, given a month notice of what needs to be done and given to parents in both languages so that parents are responsible to assist. Graded by components: Creativity, Content, Parent piece etc.. There will be 1 project a month in either one. Teachers who decide to do 2 projects a month is at their discretion. We are pushing rigor and consistency.

Students may need appropriate graphic organizers as tools for scaffolding their thoughts prior to writing in their Reading Response Journals. These are text dependent questions that serve as entry points of discussion for following day.

4. BI WEEKLY- ESSAY TASK- This can be ELA/ Social Studies- Teachers need to articulate so students are not managing 2 essays at the same time. This task will be used with our own informational or persuasive writing rubrics for grading. Students are to use text as evidence and cite their evidence. Grades 6-8 must build stamina in their writing. More focus on Non Fiction. Building stamina in writing- Grade 6 one page, Grade 7 1 ½ pages and grade 8 1 ½ -2 pages.

5. Math- Daily math is review of current learnings- Showing their thinking- Students are to show their work.. You are assessing content on a weekly basis as per Unit of study. Math teachers assign a monthly project/ TASK – Application of Knowledge based on current learnings.

6. Science/ Social Studies- Monthly Projects based on current unit- These projects are application of knowledge- TASKS that are completed at home, given a month notice of what needs to be done and given to parents in both languages so that parents are responsible to assist. Graded by components: Creativity, Content etc.. There will be 1 project a month in either one. We are pushing rigor and consistency. Teachers in grades 6-8 are subject specific. In your common planning time with colleagues and ongoing communication, you are responsible for articulating intended projects so that tasks are assigned and paced appropriately. This includes Biweekly Essays.
