Our Community

MS 223 has an ongoing relationship with a number of community organizations that help the school fulfill its mission to deliver a hands on education in finance and technology to its students. We have partnered up with Junior Achievement of New York and Banco Popular to provide our students with courses in personal economics. The courses are taught by managers of area Banco Popular branches who donate their time to come to MS 223 and share their knowledge and professionalism with the students.

The goals of Personal Economics course include helping students assess their personal skills and interests, explore career options, learn Job-hunting skills, and discover the value of an education. The students learn these skills through activities including mock interviews, marketing oneself, practicing with job applications, check writing and learning to read a stock table. Students take these skills taught by professionals and apply them to their own work in school and other activities as they think about their career options.

Junior Achievement is an international organization that seeks to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. The organization fulfills this mission with the help of more than 100,000 professionals from the fields of business and banking that take time out of their busy schedules to work with young people from elementary school up through the high school grades. MS 223 is very grateful for our relationship with this global organization that has local roots in our community.

In addition, MS 223 has joined forces with New York City based Readers Theater Workshop to provide a number of hands on arts programs to our students. Readers Theater connects schools with resident artists across a wide variety of media to share their knowledge and skills with students. We have multiple programs that give students an introduction to a wide range of artistic styles and genres including Native American art, African sculpture, Latino culture as well as digital movie production and digital music production. We appreciate our partners at Readers Theater Workshop and look forward to a continued relationship with them.
