The Community School for Social Justice is committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment in which all members of our community can grow and flourish intellectually, socially and emotionally. To create and maintain this environment, we ask that each student become familiar with and follow all school policies, expectations and rules. We also ask that the parents/guardians of our students support our rules and expectations.
Expectations
1 Be on time and be in school each day. Students are expected to come to school each day and to be on time. If a student is late, s/he is expected to go directly to class and get to work quickly in the class without interrupting the class members.
2 Come prepared with supplies (pens, paper, completed homework, etc.) and walk into each class ready to work (sit down, get out supplies, begin “do now”, etc.).
3 Honor diversity in our school. The student body of the Community School for Social Justice is diverse culturally, ethnically, and with respect to religion. In addition, students may have different beliefs and orientations in a variety of areas. Members of the school community are expected to treat each other in a respectful manner that recognizes the right of each individual to be physically and emotionally safe. This means no racial, homophobic, sexist language, no cursing or violent language or discriminatory behavior. We can never support hateful or hurtful language or behaviors towards others.
4 Respect yourself, your classmates, your teachers and other CSSJ staff. This means we expect students to listen to each other and to CSSJ staff, and to not interrupt others or have side conversations during class time.
5 Respect our space – classrooms, hallways, the student cafe, gym, library and any other CSSJ/HOP space. Many people work hard to keep our school a well-maintained and comfortable environment in which to learn. Each of us is expected to help keep our school community clean and free of trash and litter. We expect that students will properly dispose of their food in the café and not drop any food or other litter in the halls, stairways or classrooms.
6 Take responsibility for your actions. Each student is expected to take responsibility for his or her actions as an active member of our school community. Our community is built on the unique and special contributions of each of our members, the relationships we develop and the ways we work together towards our common goals of learning and growing.
7 Resolve disagreements and conflicts in a peaceable manner. We all get angry. However, when this happens, it is expected that students will work with school staff to resolve conflicts peacefully and to develop and sharpen their skills in conflict resolution and mediation.
