Principal's Corner
January 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Since you should be receiving this in advance of the holidays, let me again extend our best wishes for a terrific and generous season.

Every month on our calendar is listed the number of steps we insist our students read at their independent reading level.  Our literacy initiative rests on the simple idea that our students will become better readers because they read.  A lot.  Think of it: you and your child both want him/her to graduate from high school.  You both may be determined that they attend college.

And what do successful high school and college students do more than anything?  They read.

Our program is a simple one.

Every day, when in school, students read for thirty minutes.

Every day, at home, on weekends and during vacations, students read for thirty minutes.

I continue to repeat this plea because it is the most important characteristic of a successful student.  Our students must become life-long and habitual readers if they are going to have the possibility of reaching their academic goals.

Research shows that in today's and tomorrow's economy, the demands for strong literacy skills are growing.  In order that our children be prepared for the demands of the new economy, the ability to read is more and more essential.

Love your children.  Make them read.

Parent Coordinator Update
January 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Even though this is a January calendar, I want to take this opportunity to encourage all of our families to remember how important it is to select gifts which will support our students in their academic growth.

Please purchase books, art supplies, magazines, and/or musical instruments.  Besides having them read every day, during the break send your children tot he library, to museums -- they could go to a great new location every day of the week!

New York City is a great resource for helping students learn and grow.  Your kids live in one of the greatest cities of all time!  Help them take advantage of it!

Sincerely,

Mr. G
