Principal's Corner
February 2011
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Over the past several months, we've noticed a terrific amount of activity in the former mover-warehouse across the street from the school, running the length of Clay Avenue. I spoke with two construction workers one recess and they could give no information. Then "For Rent or Lease" sign appeared.
Now it turns out that the City has been planning on placing a 200-bed homeless shelter for men on this site.
We are sympathetic to the homeless, and serve a good number of families who are struggling with homelessness.
But we do strongly feel that placing such a concentration of men next to three middle schools with over 1000 children is ill-advised and poses problems both for the men in the shelter and our children and families.
The following elected officials will join the families of all three schools in our building on Wednesday, February 2nd, at 5:30pm to listen to our concerns about this decision which was made with any consultation with our three schools and, as far as we know, without notification of nearby homeowners or tenants.
It is our hope that a strong and powerful neighborhood turnout will emphasize the will of our local community in whether this is a decision we want to stand next door to our children’s schools.
I look forward to seeing you n the evening of the 2nd.
Patrick F. Kelly
Principal
Note: The meeting originally scheduled for the evening of February 2nd has been moved to February 9th due to the inclement weather.
Parent Coordinate Update
February 2011
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This month the City requires schools to celebrate diversity in all its forms. The "Respect for All" campaign invites all of us to consider our treatment of the great variety of individuals with who we share our lives.
Each student in our school and community brings the richness of our city's cultural diversity and the desire for respect. It is our policy as a school to maintain a safe and supportive learning and educational environment that is free from sexual harassment committed by students against other students. Such harassment is unacceptable conduct and will not be tolerated.
So what is Respect?
Respect is more than just tolerance: it is dealing with each person with esteem, acknowledging their human excellence. It is treating people with proper acceptance, courtesy and regard for their dignity. It is what we want for ourselves and for our children.
Sincerely,
Mr. G
Mr. Gratereaux
