Principal's Corner
November 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, we will be sending reports home regarding your child’s performance in the New York State Education Department’s English Language Arts and Mathematics exams in the spring of 2010.

You will recall that city-wide, there was a dramatic decline in scores from 2009 to 2010.  Our own proficiency scores declined 20 percentiles in ELA and 32.7 percentiles in Mathematics.

The reason for this decline is simple. The State decided that they were raising the cut-off points needed in each grade to achieve proficiency.

Think of it like this: to hit a home run in 2009, our kids only needed to hit the ball 370 feet, but in 2010, the ball had to travel 400 feet.  Result?  Fewer home runs.  In fact, our mean scale scores in ELA went up or stayed the same in all grades (despite what the overall decline would indicate).  Our kids improved in ELA, though these reports don’t indicate that.

That said, we have a long row to hoe.  In order to regain our steady improvement over the past several years, we must continue to focus on our bedrock work in literacy, writing and mathematics.

Encourage your children, and explain to them that this data report doesn’t really reflect the progress they have attained.

I will be glad to discuss this with you at our Report Card Conferences on Tuesday, November 16th, from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm and from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
