ELA (English Language Arts)

P.S. 85 follows the New York City Department of Education's Comphrensive Approach to Balanced Literacy.  Teachers engage students through read alouds, guided reading, shared reading, interactive reading and mini lessons in reading and writing.  This is supported by the Teacher's College Reading and Writing curriculum units.  In addition, the 100-Book Challenge program supports students independent reading.  Students in grades 2 to 5 use the Words Their Way program for word study instruction.

P.S. 85 believes literacy instruction should be organized around authentic literature.  For this reason, students have access to extensive classroom libraries.  We have created a mobile library system to support the needs of developing readers by providing appropriate and high interest text for each grade level.  Mobile carts are organized around themes such as biographies and fairy tales and are rotated monthly.

In addition, our Media Learning Center (M.L.C.) has provided students with additional books, laptops and other multimedia resources.
