Policy on electronic devices

Students were informed in grade-level assemblies that our enforcement of the Chancellor's policy on cell phones and other electronic devices has changed somewhat from last year.  What remains the same is that cell phones, I-Pods, PSP players, etc, remain absolutely prohibited in RKA and in all New York City public schools.  What is different, however, is how we will handle the return distribution of these prohibited items if and when they are confiscated.

We are not in the business of searching thorugh students' bags or pockets to find prohibited items.  If a cell phone, etc, is seen on a belt buckle or heard on vibrate or with ringing sound, a student will be asked by school staff to hand in the electronic device.  That item will be labeled in a plastic bag with the student's name and date and it will be locked up in the dean's or administratior's office until the distribution time every two weeks.

Why every two weeks?  Most middle and high schools have an end-of-month distribution of cell phones, etc, but we want to accomodate families' needs to communicate with children on the way to and home from school.  Therefore, we are arranging for distribution every two weeks.  Please understand that this distribution will occur after school, so no academic time is missed, and a student will need his/her ID card in order to pick up the confiscated item.

Confiscated items will be returned every second Friday in room 308 from 3:15-3:45.  You must have your ID card to pick up your property.
Pick up dates are:  9/21, 10/5, 10/19, 11/02, 11/16, 11/30, 12/14, 1/11, 1/18, 2/8, 2/29, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 5/2, 5/16, 5/30, 6/13.
