Mr. Gertsen - Yearbook
For Year Club this coming year, students will gather to assist in the creation of their 8th grade yearbook. Students will learn how to use computer programs such as; Google Pages, Microsoft Word, Pictavo in order to gather, organize and present information for the 8th grade yearbook. Tasks will include, organizing page backgrounds, importing and organizing student photos, and collecting and inputting student writing.

Mr. Farez - Jewelry Making
Mr. Farez is helping the students learn about the history of art. The students wil practice brainstorming and coming up with ideas. They will then create a plan to execute and complete their projects. The purpose is to teach the students the importance of reading, writing, and math. The students will then correctlate and connect them to the arts. Mr. Farez is trying to teach the students how also create a small business model with all proceeds going to a local charity.

Multicultural Music
The Symphonic Youth Program is designed to provide music instruction in the following instruments: flutes, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, piano, bass & percussion. In addition, the program provides participants with the opportunity to become members of a multicultural symphonic ensemble. The goal of the program is to qualify students for admission to specialized music schools and music programs in New York City.

Mr. Gertsen- Math
The students in Mr. Gertsen's math club will gather to assist each other in perfroming mathematical tasks. Math club will primarily attend to the needs of English Language Learners and how these students use mathematical language in problem solving. The club will focus on what is expected for upcoming Common Core State Standards(CCSS). Students will complete CCSS style tasks with a focus on ratios and proportions.

Mr. Laks- Guitar and Keyboarding
Mr. Laks will teach up to ten students the art of guitar and keyboarding playing. Mr. Laks will work with both beginner and intermediate students to foster an enjoyment of playing an instrument. Students will learn how to play chords, notes, and write songs. The goal is to help students express themselves and their ideas through music. This will be done through direct group instruction, one-to-one lessons, and on- and off-line assignments. As music is numbers-based, we will be using Math, as well as Literacy in songwriting when we reach that point. Mr. Laks students will also be able to write at least one song of their own by the end of this program, using what they have learned in class. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with professional musicians during on-site visits.

Mr. Pontebbi- Fitness Club
The fitness club will be used as a tool to motivate students towards better health. One main objective is to promote better physical and mental well-being. The teacher will provide knowledge in how to choose better eating habits as well as introduce exercises that will help strengthen and tone key muscles of the body. The exercises will consist of fast paced and toning movements. Each student will be expected to set a fitness goal, aspire to reach it, and surpass it. Goals will be set and reached over a period of four weeks. Students will gain an understanding. of the importance of good health and how the body works. 

Ms. Zanio - Creative Writing

Ms. Fei - Digital Photography
Participants will learn basic techniques in digital photography and develop themselves as leaders in photography and all other areas of their lives. Each club session involves games, creative activities, and group discussions in addition to camera time. 

Ms. Freedman - Animation Club
Animation club concentrates on exploring the principals of stop-motion animation by combining visual art with writing. Using clay, paper, wire, paint and more, the students experiment with different stop-motion techniques such as puppet-making and claymation. Students begin with an original character and set design. They then create their own story and make it all come to life in an animated cartoon, created completely by them!

The mission of the M.S. 254 after school program is to nurture and cultivate the unique qualities of each student through an interesting curriculum that exposes the students to a multitude of academically enriched arts based and sport based activities.

Fordam University's Liberty Partnerships Program, is committed to the discovery of wisdom and the transmission of learning through research and through education of the highest quality, providing all students with the knowledge, skills, and qualities required to be successful in an ever-changing, diverse, technological and multicultural global society.

Goals:
  1. To support LPP students in completing middle school and prepare them for successful transition to high school

    • Students will decrease their number of days absent from school

    • Students will decrease the number of referrals for disciplinary action

    • Students will develop a positive attitude towards school

    • 100% of students will achieve standard or higher in ELA

    • 100% of students will achieve standard or higher in Math

    • Students will use creative arts to express themselves

  2. To involve parents in supporting their children’s education and personal development 

    • Parents will attend school related meetings

    • Parents will be aware of school resources to help their child succeed

    • Parents will encourage their children to attend school and engage positively in the learning experience

  3. To enhance the development of leadership skills in the students 

    • Students will learn positive leadership skills

    • Students will engage in leadership activities both within the school and their community

  4. To provide professional development opportunities for middle school staff 

    • Teachers will learn effective ways of using technology in the classroom

Learn It Systems The mission of Learn It Systems is to provide every student with the skills they need to reach their academic goals. We strive every day to create academic programs which will enrich the lives of every student and work diligently to perfect our services so that every child has the opportunity to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Whether it’s a summer program, after-school intervention, or ELL program, Learn It wants every student that completes our program to finish more confident and committed to being their best. Our goal is to be good partners with classroom Teachers and School Administrators to provide customized educational solutions that positively impact students, schools, and communities.
