Science

Goal: To increase the students’ academic levels (school wide) by creating/developing more positive student attitude toward science. The accomplishments will be measured by the students’ overall academic levels increase.

The teachers of Science will instruct the students using real-life situations in science, through the use of technology (films, videotapes, videodiscs, CD ROMS). This method of instruction, would visually equip the students with the necessary tools to effectively increase their comprehension level of Science concepts and be able to communicate what is learned with confidence. It will create opportunities for the students to develop their abilities to think by drawing associations, making comparisons and linking knowledge learned in school to that which they will discover in real life.

The ELL students will be instructed in their native language to ensure their understanding of the terminology(ies) and concepts.

Monies from the Mayor’s capital budget plan have been allocated to PS/MS 279 for a state of the art science lab which will open during the 2008/09 school year. (Copies of the draft are located in both the school’s lobby and in the Science showcase on the 2nd floor.) The school was selected, at this time, based on its needs. In addition to the Science Lab, plans are to create three (3) lab sites (Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle School).
