The mission of the staff, parents, and students of P.S.396 is to create a structured learning environment that is child-centered, nurturing, risk free, and flexible in meeting the needs of all students. We embrace the opportunity to promote and enrich each child's learning and to develop partnerships with families to help each child achieve his/her full potential. We strive to provide meaningful lifelong learning experiences that will enable all students to meet high standards. We will provide our students with the skills and values needed to become critical thinkers, learners, and leaders. "BUILDING A FUTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN"
The following programs are in place at P.S. 396: Reading Recovery, Guided Reading, Guided Math, ESL push-in, Project Arts, Learning for Life, afterschool, and vacation school (during winter and spring recess) to sharpen test-taking skills, Universal Pre Kindergarten that serves the community, story teller, and Third and Fourth grade enrichment through Arts Connection.
Our students, in conjunction with M.S. 390 students, participate in our District 10 Choir. 21st Century works with our K - 4 students after school offering a variety of activities to enhance our student's social and emotional development; the students engage in sports, trips, dance and other activities.
P.S. 396 has partnered with Lehman College to implement Project STARS, a family literacy program that is part of the national Even Start program. Even Start brings four components to the community. They are: Adult Education, Early Childhood Education, Interactive Literacy Activities and Parent Education.
Bronx Community College supports our kindergarten and first grade students through the internship program. We participate in Math in The City.
Project LINC gives us support with the Buddy Reading Program.
