The High School of American Studies is a public high school operated by The New York City Department of Education, in collaboration with The City University of New York (CUNY) and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The school has a special emphasis on American Studies combined with a rigorous college preparatory program.
The schools dual mission is to prepare students in the New York City for higher education and for the challenges and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic, pluralistic society.
HSAS is a small school that gives individualized attention and offers junior- and senior-year opportunities to take seminars, Advanced Placement courses and regular Lehman College courses for college credit.
The school provides history enrichment courses that include visits to historical sites, scholarships for summer study, guest lecturers and many other interesting programs. In addition to this, students get the opportunity to access the Lehman College Library, Apex Gym, Art Gallery, Performing Arts Center, and other facilities.
