The staff, students, parents and community of M.S. 180 are devoted to academic excellence and the cultivation of individual strengths and talents in a safe and supportive environment where individual differences and respect for the rights of others guide school and community behavior. The Arts are a vital component to the educational philosophy design and program at the Dr. Daniel Hale Williams Middle School for the Visual and Performing Arts. The Arts provide the motivation, the challenge, the direction, the recognition, and the self-esteem essential to the emotional, social, and academic success of our students. The school curriculum affords each student the opportunity to achieve and demonstrate high standards in many domains, such as the arts, academics and athletics. Our goal for all students is to prepare them to become productive and responsible members of the culturally diverse global community.

Grade 8 accelerated academic courses include Regents Earth Science, Regents Mathematics, Advanced Spanish, and Advanced English. We are a school for the Arts and offer classical dance, theater, vocal, instrumental music and advanced computer studies. There are also after school programs for students not meeting standards.

Non-academic activities included: A boys and girls basketball team, flag football, golf, double Dutch, scrabble, cheerleading, chess, and many other after school programs.

Our community organizations play an important role in the success of our school. We have developed partnerships with Lincoln Center, Fordham University, Lehman College, Creative Arts Team from New York University, City Center, and the Hebrew Home for the Aged.
