Community Ground Rules

Every school community needs a set of understandings.  In other words, community members need to agree upon ways of working together.  Students and staff come from many different backgrounds, and we cannot take for granted that everyone will conduct themselves in the same way.

All of the ground rules arise from the Habits of Character.  Students need to know all five Habits of Character. Individuals who live by the Habits of Character are individuals who also follow the community ground rules.

The following questions must guide our conduct:

1.      Does our behavior support one another’s learning?

2.      Do our actions make others feel safe and unthreatened?

3.      Do we respect ourselves and others by being present, punctual, and prepared?

4.      Do our actions keep our work and property safe?

5.      Does our behavior protect the reputation of the school as a whole?

The following ground rules support a positive working environment:

About Responsibility

Respect the authority of the school staff and respect one another.

Practice good listening by giving others a chance to speak.

About Language

Keep noise down to appropriate levels.  Speak, don’t shout.

Use respectful language.  Offensive language based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and physical appearance is verbal abuse that cannot be tolerated

About Ownership

Cell phones and pagers cannot be used, seen, or heard.  The school is not responsible for stolen or lost items.

Portable entertainment devices (mp3 players, CD players, PSPs, etc) can not be used, seen, or heard.  The school is not responsible for stolen or lost items.

Ask permission to use other people’s property.  Stealing or unauthorized “borrowing” are harmful to individuals and the environment.

Keep the environment clean and leave it better than you found it.  Littering, writing graffiti, and damaging school property or other people’s property or work is not acceptable.

About Time

Be where you are supposed to be.  Leaving the building during class time is a serious offense.  Leaving a class without permission and being late to class are very serious as well.

About Physical Space

Keep your hands to yourself.  Disputes and differences must be handled in a non-violent, non-threatening manner.  School is also not the place for playfighting.

Students can use the elevators only when given written permission for medical reasons.

Students cannot have food or drink anywhere except in the cafeteria
