Arts

PS 54 exposes its students to the performing and visual arts through dance, music and arts and crafts.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program links into the child’s creative spirit. Students experiment and create artwork in a variety of mediums  and are encouraged to develop their own ideas and images through exploration. They are taught to use the elements and principles of art (line, color,  texture, shape) to communicate their ideas. We support our students’ creativity by displaying their artwork throughout the school year-round and hold an  exhibit at the end of the year. Many pieces of artwork are purchased by those attending the exhibition.

Dance

The dance program ties academic subjects to movement, helping students deepen their understanding of cultures being studied in the  classroom and make historical connections through dance. Skills learned include basic components of choreography and performance, group cooperation, self-confidence, giving and receiving of constructive criticism and understanding the connection between dance, culture and history.

Music

Music is infused through cluster programs and activities, where students are exposed to different genres from around the world.  Music and song are also  part of the educational experience through our dance program.
