Mentoring
ABCD will provide guidance and support to students in the form of positive adult role-models who are either college students or already in the professional world to help them go to and graduate from college. Our Lead Partners in this endeavor are Pride Technologies and Medgar Evers College: School of Business.
Field Trips
ABCD students will travel to corporate offices, development sites, public planning offices, community organizations, and neighborhood points of interest. By exposing students to a variety of experiences, we will expand the learning environment of the school and increase students’ ability to adapt to many situations.
Community Service
All ABCD students will participate in our Youth Service Club, created and maintained in partnership with New York Cares. Students will also be working on service learning projects in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, including working with the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to study local businesses.
College Tours
ABCD will prepare students to go to and graduate from the colleges and universities of their choice through our rigorous academic program, real-world experiences, and exposure to the college environment. In 6th and 7th grades, students will visit local New York City colleges. In 8th grade they will travel to SUNY and other schools in New York State. During 9th through 12th grades, students will visit schools in New England, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., as well as a tour of historically black colleges in the South.
Internships
We believe that students learn from doing. We will provide interesting real-world experiences for our students, such as internships in the professional world. We will work with our many outside partners to create internship programs specifically for ABCD students.
After-School Activities
ABCD students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of clubs, sports, and activities during our extended day program. They will play basketball, take swimming, and run track. Our faculty, staff, partners, and parents will run the Chess Club, Writing Society, Entrepreneurship Group, and other clubs. Students will also have access to after-school tutoring to help them improve academically.
Speakers
Our theme of business & community development comes to life through our monthly speakers. By bringing outside professionals into our school to speak to our students and faculty, we will get them excited about our theme throughout the entire year.
