MISSION Public School 59 is committed to creating a legacy of academic excellence for each and every student. We seek to develop individuals who cannot merely be defined by standards, but can set them as well. Our goal is for each student's social and intellectual growth to be exceeded only by their humanity. We instilled in them the knowledge that we are interdependent members of the global community and have an obligation to make a contribution of substance. We show evidence of this commitment through our valued ongoing partnerships with parents and community-based organizations. We model this commitment by making this a place where teaching and learning is honored everyday.
Enrichment We believe that every child is gifted. Therefore, as part of our enrichment program we offer cluster classes once a week in different areas of interest to spark the talented and gifted part of every child. Through student interest surveys, staff members create offerings based on what our children say they want to know more about--the underlying idea is that students will be excited about shaping their own learning experience if they feel they have a voice in the subject matter. We currently offer: singing, crafts, music soundtracks, gardening, science, acting, cooking, puzzle masters, Tai Chi, poetry society, jewelry making, movement arts, yoga, recycling, knitting, puppetry, jazz appreciation, digital photography and cake decorating. Our School wide Enrichment Model is used to meet the needs of all learners. One component of this model is the use of the Renzulli Learning System (RL), an online program which opens the door for every child to discover their own talents and interests. Students begin by taking an online survey in order to develop an individual profile which identifies their personal interests, learning styles and preferred expression styles. The final profile is a vehicle for each student to direct his or her own learning and for teachers to plan individual, small group and whole class instruction based on student's interests. RL is also a search engine, updated daily so that all hits are child-friendly. Teachers are able to program the search engine so that the hits each child receives are age appropriate and matched to student's reading levels. Templates for projects, activities as well as virtual field trips are resources which allow students to bring their investigations to culmination; parents and teachers can interact with students through the site, offering advice, suggesting additional resources and simply providing support.
After-School Our after-school activities focus on both academic and enrichment opportunities. Students have academic support through our academic after-school instructional classes. We also offer recreation, chorus, cheerleading and chess programs after school.
