Dear Parents in Grades 3, 4 and 5,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and welcome you all to a new school year. My name is Carmen Asselta and I am Assistant Principal in charge of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. It is both a privilege and a pleasure to be working with your children and I look forward to providing them with a stimulating and productive year. I am certain that you have many questions about our instructional program and the goals your children will be working towards. You will hear a great deal about these matters on Curriculum Night from your child’s teacher, I would however like to share some of the goals of each grade with you:
Grade 3 – This is an extremely important transitional year, when children move into the “upper school” and are encouraged and supported in learning the structures needed to function independently. We also work towards preparing all of our students for their first experience taking New York State standardized tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Grade 4 – The focus will be on academic growth and community service. Students in all classes will be involved in reaching out to contribute in some way to the betterment of PS 94 community as well. As the Sunset Park Community.
Grade 5 – Our “seniors” will be working towards establishing the discipline and maturity needed to achieve a successful transition to middle school. This will include being involved in one of our 5th grade academies. Working in academies gives your child the opportunity to choose an area of study based on interest and then participate in open-ended exploration of that topic. We will also focus on the importance of making good choices as we move into the pre-teen years.
Our goal is to provide every child with the opportunity to reach his or her fullest potential in safe and nurturing environment. Toward that end, I welcome your input and look forward to meeting with you very soon. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 718-435-6034 (x4150) to schedule an appointment.
Sincerely,
Carmen Asselta
Assistant Principal
