Our Mission

The central vision of the staff of PS 81 is the successful academic achievement of all students. The core of our pursuit is principled in the belief that all students can learn and must be prepared to be contributing and productive members of society in the 21st century. We believe that through effective collaboration with our parent body and community members we can create an enriched, diversified, and engaging learning environment in order to nurture students academically, socially, and culturally, while promoting positive self-esteem. To that end, our focus has been the integration of high expectations for all students and teachers, encouragement of active parent participation, and the on-going development of support strategies for students, parents, and teachers as we promote academic excellence.

Special Programs

We have a departmentalized primary unit for grades kindergarten through grade three, with departmentalization for the major subjects. For grades 4-6 there is an "academic honors" class. Our Science Resource Center is a fully reconstructed science center resulting from a grant award. A Staff Development Center has expanded resources for staff.

Extracurricular activities include Extended Day, Cultural Celebration Programs, Project Read, Instrumental Band, Reading Club, Chess Club, Career Day, School Outing, Penny Harvest Drive, Ezra Jack Keats Book Making Contest, Field Day, and school sponsored trips.

Our Community

The N.Y.C. School Volunteers continue to train our parents to provide assistance to the academic needs of their children at home and at school. This year we have a collaboration with Community Service Society and receive services from the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program. We also partner with Bedford-Stuyvesant Early Childhood Development Center.
