Rules & Regulations
Attendance/Absence—Students are expected to attend every school day. Attendance and participation in class are required components of a student’s grade. Absence from class will have a negative effect on a student’s grade. Any undocumented absence will be considered a cut.
Students are allowed to make-up work for absences. In order for the grade to be recorded, the make-up work must be completed and submitted by a date specified by the teacher. Submission of make-up assignments does not guarantee passing.
If students are absent for any reason, they must bring a note from their parent/guardian to show their teachers. After teachers sign the note, students must bring it to the Attendance Office to be recorded. In addition, parents/ guardians may telephone the Attendance Office to state the reasons for absences or lateness.
Attire—Proper attire is required at all times. Hats, head coverings, halter-tops, shorts, and skirts that are too short (as determined by the administration) are not allowed in school, regardless of the weather. Similarly, any gang-type clothing or paraphernalia (beads, bandanas, headbands, kerchiefs, flags, colors, bracelets, etc.), are not allowed. If students are not dressed appropriately, a parent will be called and the students may be sent home.
As part of the dress code, all students are required to come to school with books/school bag. Students attempting to enter the building without their learning materials will be remanded to the focus room until their parents/guardians can be contacted (then they will be permitted to attend regular classes).
Focus/Holding Room (SAVE Room)—Students who are perpetual discipline problems may be remanded to the Focus Room (B47) for either part of or the entire school day. Teachers are required to provide work/homework to their students upon request by the Deans’ Office.
Homework—Students should expect to receive homework in every subject class every day. The purpose of homework is to give students a chance to practice the skills and use the information they learned in class. Doing homework also lets them know what they need more help with in class.
Barton’s homework policy involves responsibility on the part of the student, the parent, and the teacher. Teachers are expected to assign and monitor homework regularly. Students are expected to do all assignments and make up any missed assignments. Parents are expected to help provide a suitable place for students to do homework and to help make sure that all assignments are completed.
Homework help is available from the tutoring program that is open after school Monday through Thursday. Students should contact Ms. Eisenstark in Room B57 to get Honor Society tutoring help. Each department will also have its own homework policy, tutoring policy, and teachers available to help.
Illness—If students become sick during the day, they can get a pass to the Medical Office from their teacher. They must have a signed pass to be admitted to the Medical Office. All students, regardless of age, must have a parent or guardian pick them up if it is necessary to go home because of illness. Students should make sure their blue emergency cards are completed so someone can be contacted. This is the law.
Lateness—Students are late if they are not in their assigned seats by the time the bell rings. Teachers are required to close their doors at the late bell and commence teaching promptly. Students who arrive after that not having a pass, must be held accountable (sign late log and deduct point from the grade). Students who come to school late, must enter through the main entrance once cafeteria scanning closes. Students later than 15 minutes into the class will be held at the main desk for the remainder of the period.
Locker Rooms—Students can use the gym locker room only during their physical education period. They cannot store coats or books in gym lockers.
Prohibition of Early Departures for Students—Students are not permitted to leave school grounds and return. Clara Barton maintains “captive lunch” and students are not permitted to “go out to lunch.” If a student leaves the school, he/she will not be permitted to reenter without penalty. Students re-entering, will be remanded to the Focus Room for the remainder of the day, written up, parents notified and possibly suspended.
Records—If students change their name, address, telephone number or legal guardian during the school year, they must notify the Attendance Office (Room 217) immediately. They must bring a utility bill to the office as proof of address change or a telephone bill for a telephone number change. The school’s records are legal documents that must be accurate and kept up to date.
Suspension—Students who have been suspended or are involved in school disciplinary proceedings, by operation of law, must be provided with work/homework from the classes on the program cards. It is irrelevant whether the student is a “no show,” “poor performer,” or does not return the work – all teachers must provide work. To that end, teachers who are requested to provide work must immediately do so returning the work to the Deans’ Office. Similarly, student behavior resumes must be promptly returned to the Deans’ Office upon request.
Young Children in School—Under no circumstances are students allowed to bring babies and young children with them to school.
