Barton has an exemplary arts program, which has grown over the past six years to now include a sequence of courses in both the visual and performing arts. One term of art and one term of music are required for graduation for all students (most take the two courses in the 9th grade). Students may fulfill the music requirement with an instrumental or general music course. After the first-level music course, students may enroll in the appropriate level band class. In Required Art, students work with a variety of art mediums and many go on field trips to one of the outstanding New York City art museums. After completing the required art course, students may enroll in Ceramics, Computer Graphics, Advanced Drawing, or Mixed Media courses. Student work is exhibited throughout the building, including special exhibits in the 2nd floor gallery space. Dance classes (taught by a NYS certified dance instructor through the Health & Physical Education Department) are offered in all terms to fulfill physical education graduation requirements. Students in intermediate band, advanced band, and dance classes perform in concerts near the end of each term. Our Winter Concert takes places in December and the Spring Arts Festival, which also includes a showcase of outstanding visual artwork, is in May.
