         The Health Careers Department offers six major areas of study:  Dental Assisting, Dental Laboratory Assisting, Nurse Assisting, Medical Assisting, Practical Nursing, and Vision Technology.  The Practical Nursing major is a state approved program, which affords students the oppor­tun­ity to become a Licensed Practical Nurse upon completion of graduation requirements, the LPN curriculum, and passing the NCLEX Exam.  The State Approved Nurse Assistant Program provides graduates with the opportunity to become state certified as Certified Nurse Assistants, and deliver direct patient care.  The Dental Assistant Program prepares graduates to take two parts of the National Dental Assistant Certifica­tion Exam, which qualifies them to work as chairside assistants in dental offices and clinics. The Dental Laboratory Assistant Program programs students to work in dental laboratories making dentures, crowsn, etc. The Dental Assistant and Dental Laboratory Assistant majors provide both classroom instruction and hands-on experience either in the dental lab and dental clinic located in the school or in one of the local hospitals with which Barton is affiliated.The Vision Technology program prepares students to fill eyeglass prescription.

    Students must be on track, having passed all of their academic classes in order to be eligible for a health career major. They also must take Health Occupations Education Core, a two-credit course, as a pre-requisite and a one-credit course in Career and Financial Management. The Practical Nursing, Nurse Assisting, Dental Assisting and Vision Technology Programs are all CTE State approved.

    Dental Clinic—Room B-50 (Dr. Malcolm Stewart, Dentist)—The Dental Clinic is open for students from 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Students must submit a parental consent and evidence of a physical examination before they can be seen by the dentist. There is a one-time registration fee of $5.00.

    Our business classes provide school-to-work transition skills and academic subject enhancement. Students who are on track with the rigorous demands of the Regents’ requirements are able to take a sequence of computer applica­tions courses or choose one of two majors.
