School Policies and Regulations
Below are some of the school policies and regulations of P.S. 247. To view all of these policies, please refer to the Parent Handbook.

Attendance and Punctuality
Effective use of time is an important priority at PS 247. All students are expected to consistently arrive at school by 8:20 am. Since reading is normally the first period each day, parents need to help their children develop the habit of arriving to school on time. Children who arrive late will receive a late pass from the security officer. Parents may not accompany children to the classroom when they are late. If you are bringing your child to school late, such as after a doctor’s appointment, you must stop at the Security desk. Children who arrive late miss important instruction and morning routines.

Blue Emergency Cards
It is essential that these cards are filled out completely and returned to the Main Office as soon as possible. In the event the school needs to contact you regarding your child, it is important for the school to have all telephone numbers where you or your designated caregiver(s) can be reached during the school day. Please provide at least two emergency numbers and if possible, one emergency contact who understands English. Children are not released to anyone whose name is not on the Blue Card. If information changes at anytime during the year, it is important that you provide the school with the update.

Birthday Parties in School
Classroom teachers decide classroom policy. For example, if a teacher allows parties, he/she might request the party at a certain time. Please let the teacher know exactly what you are bringing and arrange the time. If a child is having a party outside school, unless all children in the class are invited, please mail invites instead of having your child hand them out in class.

Breakfast, Lunch, Free
Our school is designated Title I from the Department of Education. That means every child in our school is entitled to free breakfast and lunch. They are provided with hot or cold selections. Breakfast starts at 7:20 am. Children will enter the 71^stStreet, 21^st Avenue entrance. Lunch for 2nd, 3rd, & 4^th grades start at 11:20-12:15 pm. Kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 5 students eat from 12:20 pm – 1:10 pm.

Buses
School buses pick up and drop off in front of the school, on 21^st Avenue and between 70^th & 71^st Street. Please do not park infront of the building during the hours of 7:00am-4:00pm on school days so the children may exit and board the buses safely.

Double Parking
Double parking in front of the building or on the side, adjacent to the school, is illegal and extremely dangerous. Crossing guards are instructed to ask parents to move from the area. We ask you to quickly leave your children off and leave when the guards ask you to do so. Drivers will be issued summonses if they do not adhere to parking rules and regulations.

Dress Code
Our school has adopted a dress code. White or light blue shirts must be worn with either navy blue or khaki pants or skirts. A more detailed memo is available in the main office. Only students who have met with a member of the staff and signed an exemption sheet are exempt from this policy. This dress code does not apply to Pre-Kindergarten students.

Field Trips
Curriculum is enriched throughout the year with many field trips. The DOE and the school require consent slips signed by parents for trips. Children cannot leave the building without parental consent. The trips are only for the students in the classroom. Please do not bring siblings with you. The DOE requires one adult chaperone for every 10 children. The teacher will contact parents to assist on a trip.Health and Wellness
The NYC Department of Health has strict medical requirements for new entrants to school. All students entering a NYC school for the first time must have a complete physical examination, all immunizations, plus a variety of screening tests. The school checks each child’s weight, height, vision and hearing. If there is a problem, you are required to follow up with a doctor’s checkup with either your child’s physician or, with your consent, a Department of Health school doctor. You will also be informed if the school doesn’t have an updated medical form on your child.

Do not send a child who does not feel well to school. Parents whose children become ill in school will be contacted by the school nurse, or other school personnel, to take the child home. In the event your child has an accident outside of school, please send your child’s teacher a note. If your child has an accident in school, you will be informed immediately. The school will take the appropriate steps ordered by the DOE.

Lateness
Students who come to school after the bell rings at 8:20 am will enter through the front door. The security agent, Josephine, will issue a late pass. The child will be marked late. After five latenesses, you will be called or a letter will be sent home.

Teas Parent
In the first two weeks of October the school holds “Parent Teas”. You are invited to attend a parent meeting, where the principal will introduce many staff members and give you an opportunity to visit your child’s teacher. The teachers will give an overview of the school schedule and classroom activities. This is not an opportunity for you to speak to the teacher about issues specific to your child. You will be able to do this at Parent-Teacher Conferences or by making an appointment with the teacher.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences are held for all students’ families in November and March, after report cards are issued. Your child’s teacher will send a note home to schedule an appointment. This is the time for individual discussions about your child’s class work and progress. Student work is often available for you to peruse. To get the most out of these conferences, it is important to bring someone with you if you have difficulty with the English language or we will try to get someone to help you. If you have concerns that you are not sure how to raise, you may want to consult with the Parent Coordinator.

The Reporter
The Reporter is the name of our school newsletter. The newsletter is published three or four times per school year, by the PS 247 newspaper staff. Included in the newsletter are students’ work, parent news and community information.

Report Cards
Report cards are issued three times a year for students in the 1^st through 5^th grades in November, March, and June. Kindergartners receive progress reports in January and June.

School Trips
Trips are set up by the classroom teachers or by the drama, music and art teachers. A notice will be sent home for the parent to sign and be returned to school. Sometimes trips for adults are also arranged through the parent coordinator. Special 4^th and 5^th grade trips are paid trips by the students and are usually to an historical site. These trips are usually all day from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm.

Translations
Our staff is here to help with translations. Please make arrangements with the office or the parent coordinator. The following translators are available at PS 247: Chinese- Ms Liang, Russian- Ms. Rozitta Guseynova or Boris Mirochnik, Spanish- Ms A. Acosta, Italian- Ms. C Longo. Also, see the Parents Association for any flyer translations.

Visiting During School Hours
Parents may visit classrooms with prior permission from the classroom teacher if they are invited to help with a project or activity. Under no circumstances can parents interrupt instruction to meet with the teacher. If you are a regular volunteer in your child’s classroom, or with the PA, your name can be placed on a list at the front desk with the security guard. Any parent entering the building, after showing ID and signing our entry book, must go to the main office.

Voice Mail
You are free to leave messages for any staff member. Dial the main number, 718-236-4205, and follow the recording prompts. Teachers do not have outside phones lines in their rooms so parents will only be able to leave a message in the main office for them.
