Athletics & Fitness

The mission of the Public Schools Athletic League is to provide opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.
The goal of the C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness program is to improve student fitness levels and overall health by increasing opportunities for children to engage in physical activity, regardless of athletic ability. The program promotes health-related fitness through a mix of several after-school and before-school activities including traditional sports, non-traditional sports, and fitness activities. The ultimate goal is for students to grow to be C.H.A.M.P.S. — Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive Students — for life.

P.S. 247 Physical Education Program

The Physical Education program at P.S. 247 is fun, motivating, nonthreatening and successful.

The philosophy at P.S. 247 is that Physical Education is a process that uses physical activity as a means to help students acquire skills, fitness, knowledge and attitudes that contribute to their social development and well- being.

In order to achieve these philosophical goals, I do several things. The students begin by trying to have a fun and motivating atmosphere and by having a variety of exciting activities and games which engage in for the entire gym period.

By teaching different warm up games and station activities the children do not get bored by playing the same thing every week. In addition, the children are exposed to new ideas, formats, partner, team and individual games.

Lessons begin at an entry skill level and children are advanced according to their capabilities. Children play, advance and are challenged to improve their fitness skills through-out the school year. Success is built into each activity which translates into children feel good about their skills.

During all of our Physical Education activities, children work on teamwork, communication, respect, and sportsmanship. Our Physical Education Program, allows our students to grow, work and succeed at their own rate to become healthy physically fit young adults.
