P.S. 247’s science curriculum is based on the New York State Core Curriculum in Science. We focus on Life, Physical and Earth Science in kindergarten through the 5th grade. Science instruction provides students with the opportunity to gain scientific knowledge and attain the skills necessary to explain the surrounding world. This approach allows students to practice problem-solving skills, develop a positive attitude towards science, carry out investigations, and increase their scientific literacy.
The elementary science program at P.S. 247 emphasizes a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to learning.
Younger students learn effectively when they are actively engaged in the discovery process. The natural curiosity of children leads them to explore the natural world. Our lower grade and upper grade science teachers provide opportunities for their students to have direct experience with common objects, materials, and living things in their environments. Students lean specific science content within the science curriculum for each grade. The science curriculum for each grade is as follows:
Kindergarten – Exploring Properties Trees and Animals
1st Grade – Property of Matter Weather and Seasons Animal Diversity
2nd Grade – Force and Motion Earth Minerals Plant Diversity
3rd Grade – Matter and Energy Simple Machines Plant and Animal Adaptations
