Social Studies

The social studies curriculum at P.S. 247 follows city and state standards. The social studies topics for each grade are as follows:

PreK: “All About Myself”: a yearlong study where children explore the world, and in this process learn about themselves, their likes and dislikes.

Kindergarten: “About Myself and Others: a yearlong study where children examine how similar and different they are from one another. Art, math and measurements are integrated into this study. Field trips and children’s literature support the study as well.

First Grade: “My Family and Other Families, Now and Long Ago”: a yearlong study of families and communities. Students explore how things have changed over time.

Second Grade: “My Community and its History”: a yearlong study on the community’s history, which includes the history of New York City. Highlights of this study are Native Americans and New Amsterdam.

Third Grade: “Communities Around the World-Learning About People and Places”: a yearlong study of different cultures, civilizations, which includes map, globe skills, and geography.

Fourth Grade: “Local History and Local Government”: a yearlong study of Exploration, New York State history, Colonial and Revolutionary Periods, and The Birth of a New Nation.

Fifth Grade: “The United States, Canada and Latin America”: a yearlong study of American Government, Civil War/Slavery, Reconstruction/Industrialization, and Immigration.
