CHANGES IN DATABASES

Pick up the new green 2009 Databases and Passwords sheet in the Library.

The New York State Library has selected a different menu of databases including the excellent PROQUEST Platinum and some of Fort Hamilton’s subscriptions have expired, so the old sheets are obsolete.  The Library Media Center’s web-based Destiny Automation System and library home page allow students and staff access to the catalog and databases from any Internet computer in the building or at home.  Click the link below to access the library.

Fort Hamilton High School Library Website

Check the home page for links to the Brooklyn Public Library, smARThistory (art history) and the Opper Project (political cartoons).  You can also find links to poetry resources at Poetry Out Loud and Poets.org.  Tutorials on plagiarism and evaluating web sites are also listed.

NEW  DVDs

New DVDs for Spring 2009 are listed on the back of this sheet.

Check the library catalog online to search for subjects or titles.  Follow these instructions to find complete lists of DVDs, New Videos for 2009, PBS Videos, and VHS cassettes: Go to Home Page, click on Catalog tab, then Resource Lists, then Public Lists at upper right.

PLAYAWAYS

Please remind your students that the Library has a growing collection of these new digital audiobooks.  The entire book is loaded on the Playaway unit, which is about half the size of a deck of cards.  Students plug in earphones and press play and can read along with the book or just listen.  Playaways have been particularly popular with our English Language Learners.  Some titles include:  Artemis Fowl, Bridge to Terabithia, The Giver, Number the Stars and Pride and Prejudice.

CLASS PROJECTS

If you are starting a project and would like to bring your class to the library, please see one of the librarians to set up an appointment.  We use the Smart Board to demonstrate our catalog and online databases to the students.  Many of our students believe a Google search is the answer to all of their information needs. Let us show them the “invisible web” which will provide them with authoritative sources.
